The Gun Show Survival Guide: Haggle, Spot Fakes, Leave With a Story

Gun shows are equal parts treasure hunt and class reunion. Here’s how to go home happy, not just with a good price—but with a better story.

1) Walk the whole floor first

Do a reconnaissance lap. Note prices, conditions, serial ranges, and which vendors seem willing to deal. Snap table numbers. The first shiny thing is rarely the best buy.

2) Haggle politely

You’re not buying a used submarine. Ask questions, point out condition honestly, and make a fair offer. Cash helps, but courtesy closes.

3) Know your checks and transfers

If you’re buying from an FFL, expect the standard background check like any shop. Private‑party rules vary by state; many sellers will route a transfer through an on‑site dealer for everyone’s comfort.

4) Spotting fakes and frankenguns

Counterfeits tend to scream with fresh roll marks, mismatched patina, and too‑perfect screws. On ARs and clones, inspect staking, pins, and gas keys; on surplus, look for import marks and matching numbers.

5) Bring the kit

Pocket light, bore snake, small mirror, dental pick, microfiber, batteries for optics, snap caps, and a notebook. Also: snacks. The jerky helps—until it doesn’t.

6) Etiquette is everything

Ask before handling, zip‑ties stay put, muzzles stay disciplined, and never dry‑fire without permission. Thank the vendor even if you walk.

Leave with a story

The best deals at a gun show are the ones you brag about later. Take photos (with permission), trade tips with regulars, and use our alerts so you catch the next one.
